Origin of the Lakeland Terrier

The Lakeland Terrier - named after the beautiful and wild landscape of the Lake District in Northern England - was bred as a working terrier especially for hunting otter and fox. He had to follow the huntsman over all sorts of rough mountainous going, with perhaps inches of snow on the ground. Over all, these working terriers had to be fearless and strong. Erwachsene Lakeland Hündin In 1928 the breed was officially recognised by the English Kennel Club. Today the Lakeland Terrier is a breed you can find in Europe, USA, Australia and other continents.

Most of them are pets who never saw a fox in their life. But still they have the characteristics of a working terrier - Lakies are active, busy, and independent. Don't take a Lakie for a toy: it may look very cute and funny, but can manipulate the family because of it's adorable face.Of-Patterdale-Welpen (Fam. Kautz) Otherwise they learn easily to let their humans do what the Lakie wants!

With this in mind, most owners love the independent little rascals especially for their cleverness and train the dogs. A puppy kindergarten is ideal for a positive training relationship.

Every Day Care & Stripping

The Lakeland Terrier should be regularly brushed and combed twice a week.Roter Lakie-Rüde But to look real attractive and typical the dog's coat should be hand-stripped. The double coat (a thick undercoat and a hard, wiry outer coat) must be pulled out by the roots. Because of the nature of the terrier coat, this is not a painful process! The groomer is removing dead hair and encourages the growth of new coat. It takes eight to ten weeks to get a good jacket. The furnishings on legs and face need to be maintained by monthly stripping. As stripping is a skill, it is the best to find a breeder or terrier groomer who will do the stripping for some time and to learn by pratice.

Ear cleaning and nail clipping are other essential routines as well.

Dog Sports

As Lakeland Terriers are naturally active an curious, exercises are a must! Walks, play sessions in the garden and letting the dog run free keep the Lakie's body fit and are essential to his mental well-being. Obedience classes, agility training, fly ball sports are some possibilities for the dog and his humans to share time, have fun and learn a lot.
